7 TIPS: MOWING LAWN AFTER TOP DRESS & OVERSEEDING (Lawn Renovation)/ Lawn Care

In this video I cover 7 helpful tips for your first mow after you have top dressed, seeded and levelled your lawn.

First, I address the question: “When is the right time to mow your lawn after you have top dressed, seeded & levelled your lawn”. We consider factors such as grass length, temperature, wet or dry conditions and a test to check if the roots of new seedlings have become sufficiently established. This is balanced with not waiting too long where older grass could become too long and overgrow the seedlings. I also gives you an update following our successful lawn renovation project covered in our video “How to Top Dress, Seed & Level Your Lawn”.

Next, we talk about the length at which to cut the lawn. I cover the “rule of a third” for standard grass mowing and why you would want to only consider cutting 20% of the length of the grass blades for the first cut, following your lawn renovation. We also discuss whether to bag or leave the clippings and reasons why this would be a good time to sharpen your mower blades before proceeding to mow the new seedlings. I also give you a great way to access the blades to avoid fuel and oil running out your mower and I remind you to unplug the spark plug when undertaking this task.

Another really good tip is to use wide turning circles at the edges to avoid uprooting the new grass, If you have a patio or path at the edge, its better to use that on which you can turn the mower around before heading back for the next cut. Set to a funky soundtrack, I show you how I undertook this first mow and you can see for yourself just how great the lawn renovation turned out. I’m really pleased with the result!!

We then discuss the watering needs for your lawn where I give you a sneak peak at my new cabin which I built, together with my rainwater-harvesting irrigation system. This consists of my water pump, 3400 litre underground tank, solenoid valves, timers, loads of MDPE pipes and fittings, and of course my favourite – the POP UP sprinklers. Irrigation is covered in my videos “INSTALL YOUR POP UP SPRINKLER SYSTEM (Water Irrigation - MDPE Pipes)" and “POP UP SPRINKLER COMPONENTS (Water Irrigation - MDPE Pipes)

Lastly, I cover why it’s a good practise to change your cutting direction on your next mow. There's nothing more satisfying than sitting back, seeing your beautiful lawn and watching your pop-up sprinklers appear out of the ground once you fire up your system. Pure Joy!!

Happy Mowing!
